Wow. CBS almost had a 2000-sized oops, but in the end the votes coming in from Gary only took the margin down from 40,000 votes to 18,000–I guess they’re not letting dead people vote this year after all–which, loss aside, means Hillary is done.
She’s broke. She’s canceled her TV and public appearances today, with the exception of one this evening that helps with the first problem. Rumor has it that Wes Clark called her to ask her to stop. And the media is finally getting sick of the story–Tim Russert declared Obama the presumptive nominee last night when it became apparent he was finishing the evening +15 on delegates, and Politico says Hillary’s rationale to the superdelegates is gone. Heck, he’s even stopped working his campaign strategy like she’s a threat– he’s not going to campaign exclusively in primary states the rest of the way out. It’s general election time. It’s game time. Am I upset that I won’t have a candidate working my old Kentucky home and West Virginia back and forth for the next two weeks? Yes, but I’m a political junkie, and with the polls in the shape they are, I can read the writing on the wall.
Finally, finally, we know–well, we have known, but now the media is admitting–who the nominee is. Bring on McCain.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackBegala said it, I’ll repeat it, we can’t win with “egg heads and african americans” — that’s the same coalition that led to Dukakis only carrying 10 states. Unless Obama can prove he’s not some efite snob, every blue collar in this country that’s not in a union is going to vote McCain.
My .02
Couple of thoughts:
1) Most of those voters were going to vote McCain anyway.
2) Do you really, truly believe that the voters are going to stand up in the fall and say “YES! Inaction on the economy! YES! Stay in Iraq!”, or do you think that we’ve learned to not let God, Gays, and Guns fool us in the past 8 years?
3) McCain hasn’t been able to pull ahead in polls while the Democrats were busy beating the hell out of each other. Once the party calms down-and the press with it- people are REALLY going to realize how much of an empty suit he’s become since 2000. It’s a shame, yeah, but it’s going to get him buried in the fall.
4) You said Obama’s toast in the PRIMARY? Can you do math? I attacked your position as if you meant general, but your title presents me with a minor issue. Explain.
First, I am amazed how many racists there are in the Democratic party.
Second, I think HRC is just staying in it long enough to get some of her 11 million back before she closes it down.
Everyone knows she has lost .. even she knows she has lost .. This is all a money thing.
Kmuzu
Think she’s going to stick Obama with the bill? Hadn’t crossed my mind, but somebody brought it up today I was like…yeah. That’s happening.
now that’s something!
1)If Obama gets the Democratic nomination, McCain has the Presidency Wrapped up.
2)Most of the states that Obama won, vote republican for President. The big states that usually vote democrat, wanted Hillary. (Cal., NY, FL, OH, Mich).
3)A large % of Hillary voters won’t support Obama.
4)Obama has never ran a state, city, town, neighborhood or even a business. He has no experience. Never introduced legislation.
5)Ben is wrong. McCain is ahead of Obama in polling.
6)Kmuzu is right. Democrats have racists and most voted for Obama because he is black.
7)The media supports Obama because he is a controversial story. But it won’t help in the Fall election.
Not to pop El Jefe’s bubble, but:
1) McCain? Really? McCain, who has 25% party identification, and can’t get a lead on either Democrat while the press is virtually ignoring him? (more on that later).
2) The entire point of Obama is to chage the electoral map. And it’s hysterical to me that you’d cite Michigan and Florida, as they had Soviet-style nonelections this year.
3) And a large % of Obama voters won’t support Hillary. Woot.
4) All of those points apply to all the candidates in the race, except for introducing legislation, which I’d argue is as much a product of a senator’s staff as the legislator. It’s irrelevant, unless somebody wants to run a governor in a 3rd party.
5) Am I? In which poll? It’s not Gallup, Rasmussen, Ipsos, CBS, or CNN. Or the RCP 7-poll average.
6) Yes. That makes sense. I’d advise you to examine the changing margins in demographics between the early race and late race before making statements that are so patently ignorant.
7) The media doesn’t “support” Obama– they treated him with kid gloves for 6 months and then became so enamored with Jeremiah Wright that he got more airtime than HRC in the last 3 weeks. I’d hardly call that support.
Bring your a-game, kids, or don’t come.
Ben, Thanks for not popping my bubble.
Lets review some of your points:
1) You are using old 2007 data. McCain currently leads Obama 47% to 45% (CNN & Center for Politics). This gap will widen if Clinton drops out. You are correct in one area, the media is currently ignoring McCain and he still leads.
2) Your statement concerning the electoral map makes no sense. I guess Obama’s plan is to make normally democratic states vote republican in November.
3)30% of Clinton voters will vote for McCain if she is not nominated. (Gallup Poll April2008).
4)McCain has no leadership experience? McCain was a leader in several Command positions while in the Navy. He was a two term Congressman, is a four term US Senator. I’d say say he has a little experience running the show. Obama has done nothing. His election to the senate was a fluke. His only opponent had to drop out.
5)Yes, you are incorrect again. Refer to #1.
6)Oh, I have examined the demographics. More blacks support him now than than did in the early race. Others groups support him a little less than earlier. Probably because everyone is finally learning more about the real Obama.
7)The media has supported, defended, and championed Obama. If you haven’t noticed that, then you are not watching. Most networks tried to downplay Jeremiah Wright after ABC broke the story. But, a story that huge is hard to hide. In fact, Obama’s 20 year close relationship with racist Jeremiah Wright have been known about for months, but the media didn’t want to expose it.
Other liabilities for Obama include his wife, Michelle Obama.
The presidency is not an internship for Obama.
Have a nice day and enjoy the upcoming prosperous 4 years of President McCain.
Jefe,
Just as I can’t pull poll numbers from 2007–and didn’t– you can’t cite one poll to me and say that your numbers are accurate. Try here for a broad-based picture: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/
Since your ability to refute items 1 and 5 depends on finding a poll that supports your conclusion, I’ll start with item 2: I know this is going to blow your mind, but the electoral map is not a stable thing. Georgia use to be Democratic. New York used to be Republican. These things change. Look at North Carolina–there will be a fight there, and that’s a “red state.” And Democratic states going blue, eh? Really? After 8 years of President Bush? Our back yard is fine–check your own.
3) Polls lie. They won’t all come home, but most will. The 2000 McCainiacs went for W, Jerry Brown’s kids went for Bill…you get the point.
4)Senator McCain does have quite a bit of service to the nation in his background. Look up “executive experience” and hold it up to his resume. Get back to me. Shouting “BUT HE WAS IN THE NAVY!!!” don’t cut it.
5) See polls.
6) You’re telling me that it’s proof that Democrats are racists, because he got more support from black people as the race went on, and less support from everybody else? You think we have a secret handshake, don’t you?
7) Downplayed Jeremiah Wright? Right. I’ll repeat myself: HE GOT MORE AIRTIME THAN A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE LAST MONTH. Did they treat him with kid gloves early on? Yes, and that’s why our media is capable of being used by the Pentagon as a “message force multiplier.” They’re not too swift. But so say that they’re still treating BO now the way they were in Iowa is just wrong.
Also–Michelle is a liability? Bigger than Bill Clinton is? At least she hasn’t stuck her foot in her mouth in the campaign. (See: South Carolina, Bosnia…)
You have a nice day, and enjoy the knowledge that your candidate is down by every conceivable measure, and isn’t coming back.
